Have you ever written on a notepad or in a notebook and seen the impression created on the paper underneath the one you were writing on? Maybe you’ve used a pencil to rub over the pressed-in words or drawing to see the details. This indented imprint lesson expands on that concept to create a colorful and textured piece of artwork using your drawing skills from previous lessons.

Follow along with my owl on your first attempt, then go wild indenting, imprinting, and coloring any subject that interests you. My completed pieces are below and at the Supplemental Materials page.

Please make sure you have these supplies:

  • Colored pencils
  • White paper
  • Folded newspaper and/or a small stack of paper
  • Tools for imprinting
    • Chopsticks
    • Crochet hooks
    • Wooden stylus
    • Anything else with a pointed, but not especially sharp, tip you think would work

Your optional materials are:

  • An eraser
  • A pencil sharpener
  • A file folder or paperclip for organization

Practice, practice, practice!
